Spinal infections are a challenging problem and a dreaded surgical complication. Infections can involve the intervertebral space, the vertebral bones, or adjacent soft tissues; bacterial infections spread to the spine through the bloodstream. As infection progresses, the disc space and the vertebral bodies can weaken and degenerate, which cases spinal deformity, and, in some cases, the bones may push into the nerves and the spinal cord to cause numbness, weakness, pain, and bowel and bladder dysfunction.
